"On the quartzite-plateau between Sistig and Krekel out of afforestations several isolated complexes of heath have survided as residues of vast areas of the 19th century. Natural habitats of heath are changing on small areas: Erica and Calluna heaths, Nardus grasslands and nutrient-poor grassland are closely interlinked. They are followed by montane nutrient-poor grassland (Arrhenatherion and Trisetion), partially on large areas. Furthermore well-structured areas of hedges and nutrient-poor grasslands as well as wet meadows and sorrel are existing. The main part of the habitats has been created by extensive use like mowing and grazing. The future of these habitats is depending on the continuation of an extensive use.
The Nardus grasslands of heath areas are mostly small-area, but in some cases of excellent and multifarious characteristic. Calluna and Erica-heaths have also a small-area structure and the typical inventory of species. All three habitat types of heath are highly representative of the natural environment “Rureifel”. This also applies to the nutrient poor grassland, distributed on large areas. It is mostly formed well and even very well, partly as meadows of golden oat grass, partly as tall oatgrass meadows. The sphere inclose a variety of plant species partly rare and threatened.
Primary goals of development are the conservation and regeneration of the habitats for heathland and nutrient-poor grassland, so that these habitats are able to fulfill their function as centre of distribution for rare and endangered animals and plants undiminished. Hay meadows with their characteristic are to be protected and saved by adapted use. The large-scale biospheres of the “Sistiger Heide” are playing an important role within the countrywide habitat connectivity /ecological network (www.naturschutzinformationen-nrw.de).“
