In the North Rhine-Westphalian Eifel
The natural region Eifel as a part of the Rhenish Massif extends on the left bank of the river Rhine from the North of Rhineland-Palatinate to the South-West of North Rhine-Westphalia. To the west it transitions into the Belgian Ardennes and the Luxembourgian Ösling respectively, to the East and South the rivers Rhine and Mosel are forming the boundary and to the North it flattens to the Lower-Rhenish-Plain.
The average mountain formed as a plateau is crossed by numerous creeks and streams. The “Hohe Acht” (747 m) near Adenau and the “Schwarze Mann“ (697 m) close to Prüm are the highest elevations of the Eifel.
The Eifel is part of the North Atlantic climate zone: precipitations up to 1300 mm/a are very high, summers are turning out wet and cool, winters only moderately cold, wet and snowy. The average temperatures of July are ranging between 15 and 16°C and of January between -2 und -1°C. The three sub-project areas of the municipalities Hellenthal, Kall and Dahlem are located in the North Rhine-Westphalian part of the Eifel.
